Juma Al Majid Center organizes manuscripts restoration course in Aleppo
A course for restoring manuscripts was concluded on 18/8/2008 which organized in cooperation between Awqaf and Culture Department in Aleppo and Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage in Dubai, with participation of 15 trainees from Shariah, Architecture Engineering and Archeology Colleges’ graduates.
Mr. Kamil Katan, the head of the Awqaf and Culture Department, referred to the importance of this course in qualifying cadres required for restoring manuscripts and keeping heritage, he thanked the efforts of the center to succeed this course.
Dr. Bassam Al Daghstany, the head of Processing, Preservation and Restoration Department in Juma Al Majid Center cleared that the career of manuscripts restoration needs patience, long training and accurate work, he stressed that Juma Al Majid Center is ready to cooperate with the specialized institutions to transfer the required experiences.
Dr. Mahmood Al Masry, the head of Awqaf Library in Aleppo and the coordinator of the course stated that this course aims to qualify a high level cadre able to restore manuscripts in which they were trained for about one month on the steps of restoration, chemical treatments, Islamic binding in addition to theoretical lectures about the main modern techniques used for various restoration processes, he mentioned that the 15 trainees will restore 40 from 400 unique copies of the Koran.
It is mentioned that lecturers and experts from U. A. E. and Egypt have participated in this course.
Mr. Nedhal Kawaf the head of Scripts Restoration Section in Juma Al Majid Center presented the main practical trainings done in the course and the steps of restoring manuscripts such as cleaning script, gluing, binding, instruments and chemicals used in restoration and which are done in Juma Al Majid Center continuously.
