Al Majid Center Presents Lecture on Paleography and Arabic Manuscript Scripts

Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage in Dubai organized an online lecture titled “Secrets of Manuscripts: How Does Paleography Unveil the Past of Arab and Islamic Civilization?” on Thursday. The lecture was presented by Dr. Mohamed Hassan, a researcher in Arabic and Islamic calligraphy, and attended by a select group of individuals interested in Arab and Islamic heritage.
Dr. Hassan discussed the nature and concept of the term “Paleography,” which focuses on the study and analysis of ancient manuscripts to understand the evolution of Arabic and Islamic scripts over time. He also highlighted the four levels of understanding paleography and reviewed the research methodologies used in this field, such as linguistic and artistic analysis, and how they are applied to historical manuscripts.
Additionally, he addressed the significance of Quranic studies in understanding the development of Arabic script, noting that Quranic manuscripts are among the oldest and most important sources for tracing the stages of Arabic script evolution. In conclusion, Dr. Hassan emphasized the importance of future studies in paleography, underlining the role of modern technology in facilitating manuscript study and preserving heritage.
The lecture saw significant interaction from the audience, with rich discussions and insightful questions posed to the speaker through the platform’s chat feature, which Dr. Hassan graciously addressed.
