Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage in Dubai, in collaboration with the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) in Cairo, organized a virtual scholarly lecture On Wednesday, September 30, 2026 titled ” the Dominican Institute’s Experience in Manuscript Cataloguing Using the Diamond Application”
The lecture was presented by Father Dr. Jean-Nicolas Drouilly, Secretary General of the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies in Cairo, and was attended by individuals and specialists interested in the field of manuscripts and their cataloging.
During the lecture, Dr. Drouilly outlined the Dominican Institute’s practical experience in manuscript cataloging, covering three main themes.
The first theme addressed the conceptual and applied framework, including the “Al-Kindi/Diamond” application, IFLA-LRM/RDA standards, and the mechanisms for adapting them to modern manuscript cataloging models.
The second theme was dedicated to a practical demonstration of manuscript cataloging using the platform, showcasing the technical handling of bibliographic elements and the structural specificities of Arabic manuscript heritage.
The third theme examined results, best practices, and future prospects for developing semantic cataloging, while also offering a critical perspective aimed at enhancing manuscript processing methods and facilitating researcher access to these materials. The lecture saw active engagement from the audience, who raised various questions and inquiries regarding the topic; Dr. John Drouil addressed these, clarifying the practical and technical aspects of manuscript cataloging via the platform.
At the conclusion of the lecture, the Juma Al Majid Center for Culture and Heritage extended its thanks and appreciation to Father Dr. John Drouil for delivering this scholarly lecture and for sharing specialized information and insights regarding manuscript cataloging.
