Workshop on “Arabic Calligraphy: An Islamic Ornament”

As part of the cultural program organized by the Umm Al Quwain Creative Center, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Community Development, Ms. Sheikha Abdullah Al Mutairi, Head of National Culture, Public Relations, and Media at the center, conducted a workshop titled “Arabic Calligraphy: An Islamic Ornament” on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, for the students of Falaj Al Mualla Secondary School for Girls.
The workshop began with an introduction to Arabic calligraphy, highlighting its historical development over different eras. Ms. Sheikha Al Mutairi also shed light on various types of Arabic scripts, such as Kufi, Ruq‘ah, Naskh, and Persian script, providing examples of each. Additionally, she discussed the artistic and aesthetic uses of Arabic calligraphy, from decorating mosques and palaces to its application in modern architecture, such as the Museum of the Future. The workshop also covered the role of Arabic calligraphy in Islamic coinage and furniture decoration, emphasizing its authenticity and artistic beauty.
The workshop concluded with a hands-on session, where students had the opportunity to practice Arabic calligraphy themselves. This practical experience enriched their understanding of this traditional art form and enhanced their cultural and artistic skills.
